What happened this week in AI by Louis

This week’s hottest news is surely the partnership we just announced with Delta Academy, which I am personally super excited about. At Towards AI, we are big fans of learning by doing and learning together as part of a team and community.

As such, we are pleased to announce a new initiative from Towards AI and Learn AI Together for longer-form Machine Learning and Data Science educational content: A long-term partnership with Delta Academy where Learn AI Together will host a dedicated discussion forum for Delta Academy cohorts (Starting with a new cohort on October 31st, but don’t worry, more are coming!).

Delta Academy runs tutorials and weekly team competitions to help you learn by building AI applications such as Pong and AlphaGo.

We hope the new delta-academy forum on the server can be a platform for students to share their experiences and communicate with coursemates and instructors as they work through the course. We are also exploring ways Learn AI and Towards AI can help Delta Academy improve and grow, so please DM me with any suggestions you have to achieve that!

  1. The “Who’s Who in artificial intelligence” report!
This report highlights the Top 50 influencers who are driving the most engagement on the topic of Artificial Intelligence across LinkedIn & Twitter. There’s a variety of different influencer personas you can discover in this list ranging from Academics & Researchers, Event Speakers, Journalists & Contributors to Content Creators and more! And I am one of them! 😀
  2. Shutterstock will start selling DALLE-generated images through a partnership with OpenAI!
Yes, this is reality! One of the biggest stock image companies, Shutterstock, just announced an extended partnership with OpenAI, which will see the OpenAI DALLE model directly integrated into Shutterstock “in the coming months.”
  3. An AI recommending the best Text Prompts!
Yes, it does exist. This model, called CLIP Interrogator, recommends the best possible prompts to generate your image! They take an existing image and generate the best prompts to generate similar-looking images for you! Here’s how they sell their approach:

“Want to figure out what a good prompt might be to create new images like an existing one? The CLIP Interrogator is here to get you answers!”

I wonder — is that useful to any of you, or are we creating problems we never had before? Try it out, and let me know what you think!

Most interesting papers of the week

  1. Improving Speech-to-Speech Translation Through Unlabeled Text
“We propose an effective way to utilize the massive existing unlabeled text from different languages to create a large amount of speech-to-speech translations (S2ST) data to improve S2ST performance by applying various acoustic effects to the generated synthetic data.”
  2. MovieCLIP: Visual Scene Recognition in Movies
“Instead of manual annotations, which can be expensive, we use CLIP to weakly label 1.12 million shots from 32K movie clips based on our proposed taxonomy” (179 scene labels derived from movie scripts and auxiliary web-based video datasets) to create the new dataset: MovieCLIP.
  3. Towards Real-Time Text2Video via CLIP-Guided, Pixel-Level Optimization
An approach to generating videos based on a series of given language descriptions. Check out the code here.
