The Blockchain was developed as a solution to provide distributed and secure transactions, which can be scaled to a global level. But the three characteristics of this technology — Decentralization, Security, and Scalability — themselves become inter-contradictory in most practical applications, leading to a situation called Blockchain Trilemma.
This is an unwritten rule which states, a blockchain application has to compromise on one of the three pillars of it, to strengthen the other two.
