How I Use Custom GPT Builder For My Data Storytelling Workshops

With all of the recent additions to OpenAI’s flagship ChatGPT Plus tool, I have been looking at how to take advantage of its new functionality.

With ChatGPT Plus (GPT-4), you are permitted to upload data files and to prompt the LLM to interpret the file AND provide on-the-fly data visualizations (complete with the associated Python code).

The issue with this methodology is that each time you want to do this, you must upload each file AND re-prompt the GPT with all of the rules and conditions for it to follow.

I’ve found a better way — create a custom GPT using the GPT Builder tool. I recently tried this methodology out in a Data Storytelling workshop I was leading.

And wow, did it ever simplify the process!

Let’s go through the steps together so you can see how it works.

To start, you need to have a license for GPT-4. Once logged in to your GPT-4 account, you can click on My GPTs and GPT Builder will prompt you to “Create a New GPT”.
