Benchmark datasets are fundamental for machine learning research. They are standardized datasets that are easy to obtain, pre-processed, and cleaned, making them ideal for machine learning.
Data-driven weather forecasting is a very active topic. Research labs, including NVIDIA, DeepMind, and Huawei, are releasing machine learning algorithms that can take it up with established weather forecasting services.
How can these data-driven weather models be compared to each other and to the baseline of βstandardβ weather forecasting? Benchmark datasets and standardized evaluation could help.
Here, we summarize WeatherBench, a climate and weather modeling benchmark dataset developed by Stephan Rasp et al…. Read the full blog for free on Medium.
