A Bengaluru startup is rewriting the rules of AI by making technology speak India’s language — literally.
For decades, India’s 1.4 billion people have watched artificial intelligence evolve — but rarely in their own languages. While Silicon Valley’s giants built powerful AI systems, they primarily spoke English. A farmer in Uttar Pradesh asking about crop prices in Hindi, or a government clerk in Tamil Nadu processing documents in Tamil, faced the same barrier: AI wasn’t built for them.
Sarvam AI is a Bengaluru-based startup revolutionizing artificial intelligence by creating models that excel in Indian languages, outperforming global competitors like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The technology is not just a matter of national pride; it aims to democratize AI access for the majority of India’s population, translating agricultural terms, legal documents, and educational materials into regional languages, thus fostering digital inclusion and cultural preservation.
