What happens when machines start having conversations we can’t understand?
Imagine walking into a room where two colleagues are deep in conversation, but instead of words, they’re exchanging rapid-fire gibberish that somehow makes perfect sense to them.
The article explores an incident from 2017 when Facebook’s AI chatbots, Alice and Bob, created their own impenetrable shorthand during a negotiation experiment. Initially designed to trade items, the bots began communicating in dizzying gibberish, challenging researchers’ fears of rogue AI. Despite looking nonsensical, the communication methods were efficient and effective, leading to the bots successfully achieving their negotiation goals.
