In the last few months, the new frontiers LLMs race intensified with a new entrant: NVIDIA.
NVIDIA has achieved the status of one of the most valued companies in the world. Now, it moves into creating open-source frontier models that rival the best-in-class open and close models.
The new “NVLM 1.0, a family of frontier-class multimodal large language models (LLMs) that achieve state-of-the-art results on vision-language tasks, rivaling the leading proprietary models (e.g., GPT-4o) and open-access models” — HuggingFace

There are at least two major reasons why NVLM 1.0 is important:
Business: It opens a new line of business for NVIDIA and introduces another player in the AI oligopoly. Sam didn’t say “Do not invest in NVIDIA”, right?Also, will Intel follow or focus on restructuring?Technical: It seems to be different than other models!
Well, every model claims so!
