From OpenAI to DeepSeek, everyone now claims to be an AGI startup, but by 2025, the explosion of such companies is becoming overwhelming.
On 14 April 2023, High-Flyer announced the start of an artificial general intelligence lab dedicated to research developing AI tools separate from High-Flyerβs financial business. Incorporated on 17 July 2023, with High-Flyer as the investor and backer, the lab became its own company, DeepSeek.
Claiming to be an AGI research lab has become a popular marketing trend in recent years, but does anyone truly believe AGI is real or that todayβs architectures are even capable of achieving it?
Both the definition of AGI and the timeline for achieving it are highly contested. However, most machine learning engineers and researchers seem to agree that the current LLM architectures are unlikely to ever reach this supposed goal.
A recent survey of 475 AI researchers by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), conducted through its panel on the future of AI research, revealed that 76% of respondents believe βscaling up current AI approachesβ to achieve AGI is βunlikelyβ or βvery unlikely,β highlighting widespread skepticism about the ability of current machine learning paradigms to deliver true general intelligence.
