Artificial Intelligence (AI) spans theories and activities from tagging datasets to contemplating the nature of consciousness — and everything in between. As the tech industry revels in the AI spring, growing public concerns call for increased scrutiny of our latest technological innovations. Key AI experts and public thinkers agree that how we manage AI deployment will shape the long-term future of our species. However, some AI observers and critics urge immediate regulation of AI applications already impacting millions globally — warning that tomorrow may be too late. Eager to broaden my understanding, I participated in the Center for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP) Fall 2023 AI Policy Clinic. The Center aims to explore and address the complex challenges of creating AI policy with human rights and values at its core. In this article, I share my experiences as a participant in the CAIDP clinic and introduce the issues of regulating AI through government policy. I hope this piece will assist those considering whether the CAIDP policy clinic is the right choice for them.
