Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex can now show up inside your workspace as real participants — not plugins, not copy-paste. The bigger story is what Notion is trying to become.
On May 13, 2026, Notion shipped version 3.5 of its Developer Platform at its Make with Notion developer event. The headline on the release page sounds polite: “Bring your favorite agents into Notion.”
The article argues that Notion’s “External Agents” launch is fundamentally about coordination: Notion positions the workspace itself as the source of truth where AI agents can read, write structured updates, be mentioned, and be assigned work. It explains the three-layer stack (Notion as data system of record, Notion-native automation via Workers/custom agents/CLI, and external agents connected through the External Agents API) and contrasts this with the older model of running agents in terminals and manually pasting results into tools like Slack or Notion. It then lays out what builders can do immediately with Notion’s APIs and Workers, what will change once external agents arrive (bidirectional presence and visible progress in the same UI teams already use), and why this creates a new competitive battlefield for agent workflows. The piece also warns about risks like permission sprawl, duplicate agents, beta fragility, and the limitation of the initial agent waitlist, concluding with the key takeaway that Notion is effectively trying to become the “bus” every agent must ride to work inside organizations.
