A Bengaluru startup is rewriting the rules of AI by making technology speak India’s language — literally.
For decades, India’s 1.4 billion people have watched artificial intelligence evolve — but rarely in their own languages. While Silicon Valley’s giants built powerful AI systems, they primarily spoke English. A farmer in Uttar Pradesh asking about crop prices in Hindi, or a government clerk in Tamil Nadu processing documents in Tamil, faced the same barrier: AI wasn’t built for them.

Sarvam AI is a Bengaluru-based startup revolutionizing artificial intelligence by creating models that excel in Indian languages, outperforming global competitors like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The technology is not just a matter of national pride; it aims to democratize AI access for the majority of India’s population, translating agricultural terms, legal documents, and educational materials into regional languages, thus fostering digital inclusion and cultural preservation. By focusing on the unique linguistic challenges of India, Sarvam is paving the way for a more inclusive technological future.
