Optical Character Recognition and Translation Project for Beginners

This member-only story is on us. Upgrade to access all of Medium.

Hi, today we will build a multilingual OCR application in Python using Pytesseract and Gemini.

OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. It is used to detect text from an image. We have many libraries to help us do OCR on images like Pytesseract, EasyOCR, KerasOCR, PaddleOCR, etc.

All of these libraries use complex machine learning models to enhance and detect text in the image.

In this project, I am using Pytesseract. Pytesseract is a python wrapper for Tesseract-OCR engine to extract text from the image. The core OCR engine and most of its functionalities are developed using C++, which allows for high performance and efficiency, especially when processing large amounts of image data. I will be using Python, you can use tess4j if you want to build this project in Java.

Tesseract-OCR engine uses LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) neural networks, a type of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), to perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Let’s start.

If you are using Google Collab or Kaggle Notebook, you can directly install tesseract-

!sudo apt install tesseract-ocr

To add any other additional languages than English you can use the command for desired languages. For eg: I am adding Hindi, Punjabi, French,… Read the full blog for free on Medium.
