Many people (me too) predicted that writers would have a hard time since the big language models appeared on the scene. And it is absolutely true for bad and average ones. Their work became widely dispensable.

A natural reaction can be to use ChatGPT or another system to write for you. Many texts definitely got better this way. But it also has serious drawbacks.

Good is becoming the new mediocre.

Google learns to recognize and lower the ranking of AI-written texts.

And the AI degrades its own quality over time as the AI is trained more and more on AI-written texts. An experiment published in Nature reveals the potential pitfalls of “circular reasoning” in AI training. If future AI models continue to train on AI-generated data, we risk a catastrophic decline in performance. (Nature article, DOI 10.1038/s41586–024–07566-y)

Actually, this is good news because it shows that AI might never become an excellent writer, excelling at fresh ideas, unconventional and inspiring writing.
